Royal Kita with Red Stripes/ Etoffe de Gloire, 2021
During 2020, while Côte d'Ivoire experienced pre-election violence and the population feared the possibility of civil war, I received a large donation of unwanted zippers. I was struck by the irony of their vividness; zippers are only coloured in order to become invisible in a garment or object. They are in every aspect objects of servitude. As I reflected upon current events, making a royal Kita cloth which embodied this country’s need for humble servant leadership seemed timely. Unable to vote myself, this act became my own act of resistance, and prayer for this nation now my home.
