Leashed / Mal Délimité, 2020

The cloth used in these artworks are turbans and left overs from clothing that I wore when living in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. They are, therefore, emblematic of a previous life and a previous self. They have been subjected to destructive processes —burning and bleaching, but not without restraint. The harm has been contained and limited.  Certain areas of the cloth were protected using ancient resist-dyeing methods and at a certain point the fire and chemicals were neutralised.

Leviathan's Teeth #1, 2020

60cm x 80cm,

Acrylic and bleached cotton on canvas.

Dinosaur teeth seemed appropriate. Even though ghastly, huge and frightening, they can no longer harm. In the midst of chaos and darkness, we need to remember that Leviathan is on a leash (as it says in Job 41:5). The chaos monsters have lost their teeth. Evil is contained; God is still in control.

Leviathan's Teeth #2, 2020

80cm x 60cm,

Leviathan's Teeth #3, 2020

Leviathan's Teeth #4, 2020
